Genital Acne

You would find that in most of the cases what is considered as genital acne is not exactly genital acne. What most of us think of genital acne is actually a medical condition known as Hidradenitis Suppurativa. The main reason for this confusion is because of their similar visible appearance between the two conditions.

But difference does exist between the two conditions. You must be aware of the fact that acne is caused by the excess secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands while Hidradenitis Suppurativa is caused by apocrine glands. Apocrine glands are present in the groin area, the area under the arms and the nipples. These are the glands that might get blocked. As is the case with acne, the main reason for Hidradenitis Suppurativa is over perspiration in these areas. There might be some cases where apocrine glands don’t develop completely. What happens is that when these glands become clogged, material from inside cannot get outside and as such force their ways into the surrounding tissues of the blocked gland. That means painful infection and inflammation in the area of infection. That sometimes develops into lesions on the surface of the skin.

This condition can also be caused because of irritation in the groin area. This irritation might be caused by tight clothing rubbing against the skin or this irritation might be caused by laundry detergents. So, if you face problem in this area, you can change your detergent or your body soap and see what happens. If the problem disappears, there must be some problem with your detergent or soap and you would do well to remember it.

If you find that your problem persists and if you find that your lesions also appear on the genital organs, it is the time to consult a doctor. You would find that genital acne could be symptomatic of some serious ills. It could be symptom of a sexually transmitted disease such as warts or genital herpes and such might have no relationship with blocked apocrine glands. What should be understood is that most of the cases of Hidradenitis Suppurativa get out of hand just because the patient doesn’t feel comfortable in visiting a doctor. It is essential that you consult a doctor the moment you feel your condition is worsening and there is no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed. It is a medical problem. You would need medical diagnosis to cure your problem of genital acne.

If your doctor makes the diagnosis that it is Hidradenitis Suppurativa, and it’s mild, it could be treated easily. You would need to change the way you wear your clothes. It should not be tight fitting. You would also need to keep the affected area free from bacteria and other infection. So, the area needs to be cleaned with antiseptic, or hydrogen or benzoyl peroxide solution. In case, you find discharge coming out of the lesions or the lesions being painful, the doctor might prescribe you antibiotics. If it’s very severe, you might need to get it sliced open and drained but only in severe cases.
