Causes Of Acne

It is not that we don’t know the exact cause of acne. We have almost all the necessary information about it but there are few minor glitches here and there. We for sure know that the main reason behind acne is the over production of sebum. Our oil glands called sebaceous glands produce the oil, sebum which works to lubricate our skin and hair and also keep it supple. The main cause of acne is the excess production of sebum. Actually this sebum mixes with dead skin cells and clogs the hair follicles which block the sebum from coming out of the pores.

Bacteria find the resulting area under the surface as the perfect place to breed and as a result of that the skin area becomes red and we say that a pimple has appeared on the skin. So, we can say without doubt that the main reason for the occurrence of acne is the excess production of sebum. So, what causes this excess production of sebum? It has been deduced experimentally that production of sebum is almost related to the production of male hormone testosterone. This testosterone is the main trigger for the secondary sexual characteristics in human beings and secretion of sebum is just one of the effects of this hormone. The abnormal secretion of sebum makes your skin especially your face and the torso become oilier. It is seen generally that most of the bodies regularizes its response to testosterone by the age of twenty or so and as such in most of the cases the problem of acne gets cured.

There are some who believe that the causes of acne are partly hereditary but there is no certain scientific data to suggest the exact causes of acne. Why some people are more susceptible to acne and others are not is something that is under research. We can give you certain factors that seem to aggravate the problem of acne and seems to be the main causes of acne. Diet, skin irritation, stress, hormonal activities such as menstrual cycle and certain medicines are some of the causes of acne.

Statistics show that anabolic steroids for bodybuilding are one of the main reasons for acne related to medications. In addition to that halogens, barbiturates, lithium and androgens also prove to be the cause of acne. When it comes to diet, data show that most of the skim milk products seem to be the cause behind acne. You must also have heard that chocolates and fast food also prove to be the causes of acne but here opinions differ. Some experts believe in the authenticity of this belief while there are others who claim that there are no statistical data to corroborate this belief. So, we would reserve our opinion on this topic.

Scientists now a day believe that perhaps the narrowing of the hair follicle might be the main cause behind acne. And how would that happen? Well, it might happen because of excessive shedding of cells within the follicle or abnormal cell binding or excess water retention resulting in swelling of skin.

So, we find that there is not much unanimity on the factors that causes acne but we can pin point a few of the factors which seem to be the main culprit.
